However, when dealing with larger gates—such as 8-foot wood privacy gates—adding a brace becomes essential to maintain structural integrity and prevent sagging.
The Right Way to Brace a Wood Privacy Gate
When bracing a wood privacy gate, the direction and angle of the brace are critical:
- Brace Low to High: Always position the brace from the low side of the gate (away from the hinge post) to the high side (closer to the hinge post). This configuration provides the most support by counteracting the weight of the gate.
- Angle Matters: Keep the brace angle at 45 degrees or less. This ensures optimal support and prevents unnecessary strain on the frame.
- Larger Gates: For gates that extend beyond 8 feet, consider adding a middle upright for additional stability. This allows you to install two diagonal braces for enhanced support.
Chain Link Gates and Truss Rods
Chain link gates often use a different bracing method:
- Truss Rods: These braces run from the bottom corner of the gate up to the top of the hinge post. Truss rods include an adjustable nut, allowing you to tighten the brace over time to keep the gate level.
- Large Roll Gates: For chain link roll gates, such as those over 30 feet long, truss rods are installed diagonally from the top corners to the center. This prevents sagging in the middle of the gate due to its length.
